Digital Enablers for Climate Action

Time: 14 November, 16:00–17:00
Venue: Standard Pavilion

Introduction
Digital technologies are rapidly emerging as critical enablers for achieving global climate goals. Beyond their own footprint, ICT solutions—such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data, Internet of Things (IoT), and digital twins—are transforming how countries and industries monitor, mitigate, and adapt to climate change. This session focused on how digital innovation was driving tangible progress toward decarbonization and resilience, supporting more efficient use of resources, protecting biodiversity, and enabling the green transition in key sectors such as energy, agriculture, and land management.

The discussion highlighted how ICT can act as a powerful enabler of emission reductions across the economy, supported by international standards such as ITU-T L.1480 “Enabling the Net Zero transition: Assessing how the use of ICT solutions impacts greenhouse gas emissions of other sectors.” It also highlighted examples of implementation of ITU-T L.1480 and initiatives such as the European Green Digital Coalition Part II.

This event contributed to the broader Green Digital Action (GDA) initiative, which united countries and companies to ensure that digital transformation and environmental sustainability go hand in hand.

Objectives
This session:
1) showcased how ICT-enabled solutions are driving climate action and sectoral decarbonization, particularly in energy, agriculture, and biodiversity protection;
2) presented practical examples and case studies from initiatives such as the European Green Digital Coalition (EGDC), and other partners, illustrating how ICT was applied to reduce emissions, optimize resource use, and enhance environmental monitoring;
3) highlighted the role of international standards, including ITU-T L.1480, in harmonizing methodologies for assessing the enablement effect of digital technologies;
4) encouraged collaboration among governments, industry, and international organizations to scale up digital solutions that accelerate the green transition globally.
